Julia Gros is a curator and researcher based in St Ives, UK. She received her Bachelors in Art History (Bordeaux Montaigne University, France) and her Master degree in Criticism and Curation at Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts London, UK). She has collaborated with galleries, institutions and artist-run spaces - Musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design Bordeaux, Lethaby Gallery, PADA studios and Tate Gallery among others.
Her curatorial practice focuses on gathering voices around contemporary topics including notions of displacement, geographies, ecology and unheard voices. Her ongoing research focuses on the need for dialogue between the general public and contemporary art, made possible via visual connections, storytelling and the creation of places for discussion.
She has participated in a number of residencies including Global Art Practice in Tokyo, Hong Kong and London where engaging with international artists revealed an essential aspect in Gros’ practice to show the facets of unbounded artistic forms.
In 2020 she became resident curator for PADA studios in Lisbon. In recent exhibitions, she explored the impact of landscape and place on creative practices.
She is also implicated in role of publishing as a tangible form of expression, transmission and curation. She edited It remained to be seen, exploring the polarities in uses of derelict spaces and co-edited the annual publication Unknown Quantities.
